The SEO world was filled with whispers (and even a few shouts) of real-time Panda. It sparked a rather confused Tweet storm of various conversations that we finally found reprieve from after last weekend.
According to Search Engine Journal, “What was highly speculated to be a Penguin update over the weekend was actually just a core ranking algorithm update.”
Per Google, the Panda algorithm is now part of the core ranking algorithm, which is pretty big and majorly important news.
Understanding Google’s Panda Algorithm
Google uses programmed algorithms to crawl websites and determine where they should rank in the search engine result pages (SERPs). Want to rank well in SERPs, say on the first couple of pages? Then you need to supply what the algorithms want and avoid want they’ll unbiasedly flag you for, all while creating a user-friendly experience.
The purpose of Google’s Panda algorithm is to increase the ranking of websites with high quality content while decreasing the rankings of websites with low quality content. To succeed in winning favors, a website needs to:
- Produce high quality content
- Focus on unique content
- Concentrate on clout and authority
In a nutshell, you need a substantive website. Now, this is not saying you need a large website. Quality has very little to do with quantity. Focus instead on ensuring that what inhabits your site is useful, relevant, informative, and authoritative.
The Panda’s Inclusion in Google’s Core Algorithm
Since the reported update, Panda is no longer a standalone algorithm. It is instead a part of Google’s core algorithm, something search results are subjected to on an ongoing basis. What does this mean for the masses?
Quality matters more than ever.
Your ability to produce and publish high quality content is more important today than it was a week ago. So your 2016 budget had better include content creation.
Google’s update goes hand-in-hand with one of our 2016 content marketing predictions: Quality of content is going to be key this year. But in truth, this is a perpetual key that will never stop unlocking better SEO, greater visibility, and increased lead generation. And Google’s inclusion of Panda in their core algorithm proves it.
